Alright so I’ve got to be honest, this is not something that I expected to see from Chevrolet this month at all…..and after seeing it myself for the first time I was sure of two things. First is that a lot of people are going to be really upset about it, and the second is that this thing is is most likely going to be a rocket ship.
But before I give you my take on it, let’s go ahead and take a look at the teaser video for the 2024 Blazer SS that Chevy just dropped on us.
Alright, so before you throw your phone in anger about this thing being an EV because if I know my audience well enough that’s most likely at least half of you…let’s go over a few things that I think are important to discuss.
Obviously this video doesn’t show us all that much, if anything it’s more of a confirmation of what’s to come than any sort of detailed explanation but we do get a peek at the charging port which appears to be hidden behind a powered door located on the drivers side fender. We also get a sneak preview of the black with machined face SS branded wheels…and it should be no surprise at this point that Chevy is continuing to showcase it’s top tier Blazers in that Red Hot paint job.
The press release from Chevrolet left quite a bit to the imagination simply saying
“Chevrolet provided a glimpse of the all electric Chevrolet Blazer SS, which will be the first Chevy EV to feature a performance SS model. The all-electric Blazer SS will make its debut later this year and will be available in Spring 2023.”
Now I know many of you have been wishing, praying, and hoping for Chevy to drop something more like this Blazer here that I discussed in a video last month…but there is pretty valid reason for Chevy to take this route as well and THIS right here is why.
For those who haven’t seen or heard about this thing, this is the Ford Mustang Mach-E….and although Ford got a whole pile of backlash and complaints from people about utilizing the Mustang name on an EV crossover…..the move has paid off in a big way for Ford. In 2021 The Mach-E was the #3 best selling EV in the United States, coming in behind the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3.
In a recent interview with TheStreet, Ford said that they have had so much demand for the Mach-E that they have actually had to stop taking orders for two of its versions because their current production capacities simply don’t allow them to keep up with it.
This is something that Chevrolet and General Motors has obviously been paying attention to, and although some might say that Chevy is coming late to the game…others might say why not let Ford go first and see how the market reacts.
But what does this mean for the Blazer SS….well, one thing I think we can and should expect is Chevy to be benchmarking the car against the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition which puts out a respectable 480hp and 634lb ft of torque from a 91 kwh battery and dual motor powertrain. According to Ford the Mach-E will do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds which is .7 seconds faster than a C7 Corvette….like EV’s or not the performance is insane.
I would expect that by coming to market after Ford, Chevy will be able to beat out those numbers most likely shooting for that 500hp mark if for nothing more than the marketing benefits of doing so. The last time we got an SS badge on a crossover or suv from Chevy was back in 2009 with the last year of the Tailblazer SS…..so if Chevy is doing this, they should be doing it big.
But let me know in the comments below what you guys think….as always I’d like to thank you all for watching, if you made it this far into the video if you could do me a huge favor by smashing that like button it really does help me out in a big way.
